HM Submarine C16 sank on 16th April, 1917 after being accidentally rammed by the destroyer HMS Melampus in the North Sea near to Harwich. The vessel sank 50 feet to the bottom but all attempts by the crew to escape failed. The captain left behind, in a sealed bottle, details of what they tried to do and this was found when the submarine was salvaged. All of the crew perished, including George Cope. |
